The first artificial Russian satellite Sputnik 1 was launched by Soviet Union in the orbit around the earth on 4th October 1957. It was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome at Tyuratam that is 370 km southwest of the small town of Baikonur in Kazakhstan which was the part of the former Soviet Union.
