The earliest thermometers were very simple in design. In 1593, an early water thermoscope was invented by Galileo Galilei. In 1612, the first crude clinical thermometer was invented by an Italian inventor Santorio Santorio. Both the thermometers were not very accurate. In 1714, Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the first modern thermometer. It was the mercury thermometer with a standardized scale.
